Different types of cookers

When buying a freestanding cooker, you need to know the difference between its types: the standard cooker and the range cooker. Cookers and range cookers are freestanding appliances, so we can fit them into an appropriate space between your kitchen counters. Cooker sizes usually come in three standard widths – 50cm, 55cm, and 60cm, while range cookers come in 90cm, 100cm, and 110cm.

Cooker different sizes - cooker vs range

A standard cooker of 50cm is Ideal for a kitchen with slightly less space; at the same time, the 60cm cooker is excellent for any family’s everyday cooking needs, especially for a big family.

A range cooker is a bigger unit than a standard cooker, and due to their extra size, they offer more features than a regular cooker.

Size up your Cooker

Before buying a freestanding cooker, you need to measure the space you’re keeping for it. Measure the distance between your cabinet units to know the necessary cooker width. Measure the widths of your freestanding cookers from the front and each of the sides.

1. To determine the height of the cooker, start by measuring from the bottom to the top.

Only measure to the top of the cooking surface if the oven includes a backsplash control panel.

2. To determine the depth, measure the cooker's front to backward.

Include them in the total depth of the oven but leave out any handles, knobs, or control panels that are on the front. Only measure the distance from the cooker's flat front to its back.

Don’t forget to allow space for gas pipes and electrical sockets at the back of the appliance. Leave 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) between the wall and the cooker in the back.

3. Measure from one edge of the oven to the other to get the width.

If the oven has an extended lip around the hob, don’t include it in your measurement.

4. Measure from Cabinet to Cabinet or wall to cabinet, depending on where you’ll put your cooker.

Measure the dimensions of the space the new oven will go in.

5. Measure the narrowest door along the path to your kitchen.

If you choose an oven that is wider than the narrowest door frame, you cannot fit it into your kitchen. You might be able to temporarily remove a thin door from the frame to provide additional room for the oven.

6. Get a cooker with 1⁄4 inch (0.64 cm) smaller dimensions than the space.

It might not fit if you buy a cooker with exact measurements matching the free space in which you wish to place it. Avoid choosing an oven that is too much smaller than the available area to avoid having visible gaps on the edges.

Now you know whether you’re going for a range or a standard cooker and which size and type fit perfectly in your kitchen, it's time to go deeper and specify the oven and hob type before making your final decision.

Oven Types and Capacities

single oven or double oven - oven capacity

Single or Double Ovens?

You can decide this by considering the capacity and frequency of your oven usage.

Single ovens typically have a big cooking capacity of 64 liters, though they can operate up to 115L.

Standard ovens feature a grill, a regular oven, and a fan; pricier models may also provide unique cook modes and self-cleaning features.

The primary ovens of the double ovens have a capacity of about 50 to 75 liters, while the upper ovens, which are smaller, have a capacity of 35 to 60 liters.

Now, to the oven types, we all know the three famous ones: the conventional oven, the fan oven, and the Multi-function oven.

Conventional Oven

A conventional oven is the best option if you're more of a typical home cook. Without a fan to move the heat around, top and bottom heating components provide the heat in conventional ovens. With heated air rising to the top of the oven, this offers a traditional cooking method.

Fan Oven

A fan oven is the one for you if you enjoy baking or use the oven to cook several items at different temperatures. Because a fan is located close to the heat source, the heat is distributed evenly throughout the oven.

Multi-function Oven

If you’re a home cook who loves experimenting with different cooking methods, a multi-function oven is perfect. From grilling to defrosting, not forgetting fan cooking, and much more, a multi-function oven allows you to cook virtually any dish.
